OCR: Desert tortoises like the endangered American Gopherus agassizii avoid the desert heat by burrowing underground during hot weather. Living in arid sandy areas with creosote bushes, thorn scrub and cacti, desert tortoises are also found in washes and oases. These tortoises feed on grasses and other vegetation during the early morning and evening Like snakes and lizards, tortoises have thick skin which prevents water loss. Desert tortoises have a strange technique for cooling themselves - if they get too hot they may urinate over their back legs to cool down.
